What is wire binding?

Wire binding is a very popular document binding method. Pro-Binding carries high quality Wire Binding Machines and Wire Binding Supplies. With this binding method, users insert their punched document onto a “C” shaped wire binding element and then use a wire closer to crimp the spine until it is round. Documents that are bound with wire binding will open completely flat on a desk and allow for 360 degree rotation of bound pages.

Wire Binding Supplies comes in two hole patterns. 3:1 pitch has 3 holes per inch and 2:1 pitch has 2 holes per inch. The 3:1 has 32 holes on an 11” edge and can bind documents up to 1/2:” thick. 2:1 has 21 holes on an 11” edge and can bind documents as thick as 1 ¼”.

The 3:1 pitch hole pattern is most commonly used for binding thinner documents. Spines for this binding style are available in sizes between ¼” and 9/16” in diameter. 3:1 pitch wires are not available in sizes larger than 9/16”. We do offer a few colors up to 5/8”, but most only go up to 9/16”. The hole pattern used for 3:1 pitch wire binding can use either square or round holes.

The 2:1 pitch hole pattern is for thicker documents, but you can also bind the thinner documents. 2:1 pitch wire is available in sizes as small as ¼” and go up to 1 1/2”. The wires over 1” are only available in limited colors.

In order to bind documents with double loop wire a binding machine and a wire closer are required. Smaller organizations will often choose a small manual wire binding machine that offers a manual punch and a built in wire closer. Both Akiles and Renz make good quality manual machines.  Medium-sized users will often choose a wire binding machine with an electric punch and built in wire closer. The SRW ComfortPlus is our favorite for this application. The highest volume wire binding users such as binderies, print shops and in-plant printers will usually separate the punching and finishing stages of the binding process in order to increase productivity.   These users will often use a heavy duty modular interchangeable die punch or an automated punching system along with either a manual or an electric wire closing machine.
